OPEN CALL: (re)FRESH. International Conference for Young Theatre Critics

OPEN CALL FOR PAPERS: 6th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE FOR YOUNG THEATRE CRITICS

29 September – 1 October, 2016

VILNIUS, LITHUANIA

The 6th International Theatre Conference for Young Theatre Critics “(re)FRESH” will be held in frames of 13th Vilnius International Theatre Festival “Sirenos”. The participants of the conference will be provided with free passes to the performances of Lithuanian program of the festival and an opportunity to attend the newest productions of the Lithuanian theatre directors. Moreover, there will be a possibility for the participants of the conference to meet and discuss with Lithuanian theatre artists as well as researchers. The Conference will be moderated by Ott Karulin (Estonia) and Andrew Haydon (UK).

The working language of the Conference is English.

For the sixth time the Conference invites young theatre professionals from different countries to discuss relevant issues of contemporary performing arts. The aim of the conference is to provide a meeting place for theatre researchers of the youngest generation from different theatre schools to share personal experiences as well as discuss specific theories and hypothesis. This year we offer to concentrate on the issues of young theatre and young theatre makers under the title “(re)FRESH”.

The role of the new generation in the dynamics of theatrical life is obvious. As is the demand for new and unique voices of theatre makers. Every country has a different theatre tradition and history of theatre: how does today’s generation react to it? Are they rebelling or are they continuing the tradition? What is the situation of the young theatre makers today? Young theatre: is it refreshing or repeating?

We would suggest to the applicants to focus on three possible sub-themes for “(re)FRESH”:

–           New Generation: Are they ready to take a stand?

–           Rotation of Ideas: What’s new in new drama?

–           Post-Soviet Block: Quarter of the century of free speech

We would also like to address the issue of status of new generation of theatre artists. Are they turning their backs on the values of the previous ideologies or are they continuing them? Is the young generation of theatre makers contributing actively to the emergence of an original theatre? Are they bold enough with their ideas? Are they faking or are they making it?

How does the new theatre voice sound like? Do we hear it? Is it mutating? Is it loud enough and what does it have to say? What are the themes and the issues interesting for the new generation of theatre makers? Are the ideas of contemporary dramaturgy of the younger generation bringing new winds towards the stage of performing arts or is it merely just words, words, words?
